Welcome to Next Step Solutions E-Newsletter

Dear Margaret,
Well, the fall rains have come, and they keep coming! Things are a little sodden around us, but so far we have escaped any flooding. I hope all of you can say the same.

We continue to live in very interesting times. One has only to consider the recent election to be assured of that. We also continue to enjoy good economic times. The stock market hit new highs and unemployment continues to be very low.

As always, we have business information and upcoming events to share. We will cover some here and watch for more in future newsletters and on our web site. And thanks for reading!

Honoring the US Marine Corps this Veterans Day
by Margaret Purvine
Saturday, November 11th, is Veterans Day. Today, November 10th, is the 231st birthday of the US Marine Corps. Blessed with a few minutes of “free” time, I had the privilege of watching President Bush as he spoke at the dedication of the new National Museum of the Marine Corps. Particularly moving was his description of the actions taken by Cpl. Jason L. Dunham, who shares a birthday with the Marine Corps. He would have turned 25 today had he lived. Instead, he will be honored with the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving the lives of 2 of his men by using his helmet and his body to shield them from a grenade explosion. You can read the full story in the Marine Corps News.

The USMC has a long and proud history defending our nation. The museum will provide a repository for that history. It will also offer American citizens and foreign visitors the opportunity to learn more about this fabled branch of the American military.

The Marine Corps has produced many leaders for the United States, and not just within the military. Their success in this arena comes from their emphasis on leadership and their dedication to teaching all of their members the traits and principles of great leaders. Their message is also useful for those of us leading businesses. Let’s learn from the Marine’s stellar example as we take a moment to honor our military this Veterans Day.

Here is a list of Leadership Principles from the United States Marine Corps, interpreted for leaders of business:

  • Know thyself and seek improvement
  • Be proficient - technically and organizationally
  • Develop sense of responsibility among employees
  • Make sound and timely decisions
  • Set an example
  • Know and look out for employees
  • Keep employees informed
  • Be responsible
  • Ensure assignments are understood, supervised, and accomplished
  • Train employees to function as a team
